This month and next we are taking about SIMPLE, and EFFECTIVE ways to DOUBLE your energy level, and get the most out of your day, and your life! So for many today, seeing the word toxins and energy they may be thinking 'I thought that was kind of airy-fairy subject that only Naturopaths and Vegan-Yoga-Juicers talk about...' LOL, kidding but only slightly! That is usually people's subconscious reaction. I assure you today we are going to clear up what toxins are, and if they are really doing anything in your body!
WHAT IS A TOXIN?
So, before we get too far, it may be a good idea that I define what I am talking about, so here goes, 'A toxin is any organic (internal) or inorganic (external) substance that interferes with good health!' -Deanna Minich I think that makes it clear... Here is a list of different possible sources and types of toxins: (for research on negative effects see below)
Heavy Metals (Aluminum, Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, etc..) (1) (2)
Persistent Organic Pollutants (Dioxins and furans, Polychlorinated biphenyls, Stain repellants, flame retardants, etc...) (3)
Food related toxins (Antibiotics, AGE's, GMO's, Gluten, Hormones, etc...)
Xenoestrogens (BPA, Phthalates, etc...)
ARE THEY IN MY BODY? AND ARE THEY AFFECTING ME?
I will save you the suspense and give a straight answer... YES AND YES! First, are they in my body? Research says YES! Actually 'scientists estimate that everyone
alive today carries within her or his body at least 700 contaminants, most of which have not
been well studied (Onstot and others).' (3) On top of that, an article from National Geographic said they found toxic compounds worldwide, even in Polar Bears in the Arctic Circle. (4)
Ok cool... But, does it really matter and is it affecting me? I usually answer this by quoting a man much more intelligent than me, Dr. Philip J. Landrigan from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Landrigan's research focuses on toxic chemicals in the environment and their effects on children’s health and development. He was quoted saying this 'Chronic childhood diseases linked to exposure to toxic chemicals, in the environment have been surging upwards,
costing the United States almost $55 billion dollars/year!' (5)(6) We know that toxins, both natural and synthetic affect mitochondrial function, the little powerhouses that make our energy and control a huge part of our overall health! (7)
Toxins, Hormones, and Energy
This is a very complex question to answer, but we do know that in general toxins affect the mitochondria in our cells which produce energy from the foods we eat. On top of that certain chemicals have been found to directly affect our hormone balance, and have been termed XENOESTROGENS.
Below is a great TED Talk where Tyrone Hayes discusses his research on how certain pesticides and herbicides affect hormonal balance.
So I hope that clears up what toxins are, and their negative effects on your health. Next week we will talk about how to limit your exposure and what a proper detoxification protocol looks like.
